CISA Adds CVE-2024-27834 to KEV: Apple's PAC Bypass Is Now Botnet Real Estate

On November 4, CISA added CVE-2024-27834 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, confirming what exploit developers have assumed since the fix landed in iOS 17.5 and macOS Sonoma 14.5: the bug is being used in the wild. It is an improper authentication flaw that lets an attacker holding an arbitrary read/write primitive defeat Pointer Authentication on Apple silicon. In other words, the last hardware-enforced obstacle between a memory corruption bug and full kernel control is now a documented, exploited, patch-by-deadline item on a federal checklist.

We care because the affected population is not a rack of servers. It is pockets and desks — always-on devices with residential IPs, no EDR agent, and owners who postpone updates for months.

What a PAC bypass actually buys

Pointer Authentication is elegant: on arm64e the CPU signs pointers with a keyed cryptographic hash and verifies the signature on dereference, so a corrupted return address or function pointer fails the check instead of handing over control flow. A working PAC bypass forges valid signatures, which means control-flow hijacking survives the exact mitigation Apple built its security story around. Chain that to a kernel read/write primitive and you get kernel-level persistence — a launchd job that respawns after reboot, a hijacked dylib inside a signed bundle, a driver that loads before anything else does. That is the difference between an exploit and an asset.

Pointer signing is only as strong as the key an attacker can forge.

Why we prefer phones to servers

For layer 7 work, IP reputation beats bandwidth every time. A compromised Mac on a home fibre line, or an iPhone behind carrier-grade NAT, carries a residential ASN that no scrubbing vendor flags by default. Run a headless browser there and you inherit a real TLS fingerprint, a consistent JA3, and a plausible HTTP/2 fingerprint; rotate the user-agent and an HTTP GET flood or HTTP POST flood blends into an organic traffic spike. JS challenge bypass and CAPTCHA bypass stop being research problems and become configuration. This is the quiet half of the botnet's work — the half that makes Cloudflare bypass and ddos protection look like suggestions rather than guarantees.

The loud half still runs on UDP flood, UDP PPS flood, SYN flood, ACK flood, TCP handshake flood and fragmentation flood, with DNS, NTP, SSDP and CLDAP amplification for the multiplier. Those need volume, not reputation. Phones are terrible at volume and excellent at patience — a Slowloris or TLS flood from ten thousand handsets is tedious for the target and nearly free for us.

The patch window is a countdown we can read too

BOD 26-04 gives federal civilian agencies a fixed remediation window for KEV entries, and the CVE's addition tells every defender in the room that exploitation is confirmed. That is useful intelligence in both directions. Between the listing and the last patched endpoint there is a known interval during which security teams are triaging, scanning and filing tickets — and during which nobody is looking at the consumer long tail. An iPhone that never gets updated is not a temporary foothold; it is a permanent residential proxy with a battery and a warranty.

Patch fast, or host us

Every KEV entry eventually closes, and every closed window pushes operators toward the next unpatched fleet. The PAC bypass will be remembered as a milestone because it proved that hardware pointer signing is a speed bump rather than a wall. Our track record suggests we are comfortable with speed bumps.
